You all voted for it in our online poll, so here it is… the Mk1 Renault Twingo!
Those who have followed EP-COMPS for a while will know that the man supposedly in control — and we use the word control very loosely — Ed has developed a slightly concerning obsession with Mk1 Renault Twingos. But annoyingly, he might actually have a point.
The humble Mk1 Twingo has gone from quirky little French city car to full-blown cult icon. Car enthusiasts love them, the internet loves them, influencers seemingly can’t leave them alone, and just look at the thing — it has a face! Add in the brilliantly clever design, ridiculous amount of interior space, peppy little engines, fantastic fuel economy and some properly funky colours and trim combinations, and it’s easy to understand why they’ve suddenly become so desirable.
Renault took something as mundane as a city car and somehow made it genuinely fun. Now, with the arrival of the new Twingo bringing the name back into the spotlight, interest in the original has exploded. Prices across the UK and Europe have been climbing, good examples are becoming increasingly sought after, and the Mk1 is rapidly becoming one of those cars everyone suddenly wishes they’d bought when they were cheap.
Don’t believe us? Ask Ed. Just make sure you’ve got several hours spare.
Our car is a 1999 Renault Twingo Helios, freshly imported from Holland — which Ed maintains is the spiritual hunting ground for finding a good Twingo.
And this isn’t just any Twingo either.
The Helios was a special edition named after the Greek god of the sun, and the recipe was pretty simple: take an already cheerful little French box, let as much sunshine into it as physically possible and throw enough extras at it to turn a top-tier Twingo into God-tier Twingo.
You get that enormous glass roof flooding the cabin with light, funky seats, colour-coded details inside and out, electric windows, electric mirrors and, in this particular case, surely the perfect colour for something named after the god of the sun…
YELLOW.
Under the bonnet sits the wonderfully simple 1.2-litre 8v producing a mighty 60hp, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. On paper, 60hp might not sound like something that’ll rearrange your internal organs, but that’s completely missing the point of a Twingo. They’re light, eager and hilariously good fun to buzz around in, while being remarkably cheap to run.
That tall fifth gear also makes these surprisingly happy little motorway cars. Remember, the French built them to deal with motorways where the speed limit is 130km/h, so once you’re cruising, the little Twingo just settles in and gets on with it.
We know because this exact car has just completed a roughly 300-mile journey back to England without missing a beat — and without even getting through a full tank of fuel.
That’s the charm of these things. They’re not fast, they’re not intimidating and they’re certainly not complicated. They’re just happy little cars that make boring journeys somehow feel less boring. You look at it and smile. Other people look at it and smile. Then you drive it and suddenly understand why Ed won’t stop buying the bloody things.
We love the Mk1 Twingo, and judging by the poll, you lot clearly do too.
So grab yourself a ticket because you never know — this bright yellow bundle of French happiness could soon be sitting on your driveway.
And there’s one final little detail that makes this one particularly interesting.
Being a fresh import, the Twingo will be supplied UK registered to the lucky winner, with the registration documents completed directly in their name. That means the winner will become the first registered UK keeper shown on the V5C, rather than inheriting a long list of previous UK owners — a lovely little detail that should only help its provenance and desirability if the day ever comes when you can actually bring yourself to part with it.
