Yes, we get it. It’s a convertible. It’s an auto. It’s not a 330i. You can all stop furiously typing your Facebook comments now.
Before you instantly decide this is the worst thing to happen to BMW since subscription heated seats, take a second and engage those last two brain cells. Competitions aren’t designed for everyone… otherwise we’d just raffle the same car every single week.
Loads of people ask us for automatics. Whether it’s for commuting, convenience or simply preference, it doesn’t make you any less of a car enthusiast. In fact, Ed spends about 90% of his time driving an auto because, let’s be honest, they’re just better on UK roads. Plenty of people also want something affordable to insure, sensible to run, and—believe it or not—people actually like convertibles. Weird, isn’t it? So, if you’re after an easy-going summer cruiser with proper BMW character, this is exactly why it’s here. It’s about time we put another low-odds summer car on.
And honestly… we really like it. The pre-facelift cars have always been our favourites, and this rare shade of green suits the E46 perfectly, especially as a convertible. Pair that with black leather and you’ve got a timeless spec that still looks fantastic over 20 years later. Being a 323i means you still get that silky smooth BMW straight-six soundtrack, but with better fuel economy and cheaper insurance than the bigger engines. That’s a win in our book.
More than anything though, we just love the E46. They went through that inevitable phase where everyone suddenly decided they were rubbish… just like every generation of 3 Series does. Now people are remembering why they became so popular in the first place. They’re solid, beautifully balanced, comfortable enough to use every day, and genuinely enjoyable to drive. Whether you leave it completely standard, build a clean OEM+ cruiser, slam it on air for the show scene or even turn it into a manual turbo project later down the line, the aftermarket support is endless.
Some cars are brilliant because they’re outrageously fast. Others are brilliant because they fit into your life so effortlessly that you end up making excuses just to go for a drive. The E46 has always been one of those cars, and that’s exactly why we love them. We hope you love this low-odds summer BMW just as much as we do.
