The Austin Metro was originally designed to replace the mighty Mini. In reality, it didn’t quite go to plan. People loved the Mini a little too much, so it stuck around, while the slightly larger and more modern Metro found its place alongside it in the British Leyland lineup.

And let’s be honest… for years the Metro became known as the car your nan drove. They sold by the bucketload, lived easy lives, and nowadays it’s not uncommon to find low-mileage examples tucked away in garages across the country.

But times change.

The Metro is cool now.

From wild track builds to retro road-going weapons, enthusiasts have finally realised just how much fun these little cars can be. And here at EP-Comps, we absolutely love a retro hero, especially one guaranteed to put a grin on your face every single time you get behind the wheel.

Which brings us to this 1989 Austin Metro.

This isn’t your average pensioner-spec Metro. Far from it.

Under the bonnet sits a seriously spicy A-Series engine that’s packed full of upgrades. It’s based around a 1275cc unit (possibly overbored, although we can’t confirm that), breathing through a HIF44 carburettor with an upgraded air filter, an uprated camshaft and rockers, plenty of cylinder head work and a full exhaust system that delivers all the glorious A-Series noises you could ever want.

And let’s face it, who doesn’t appreciate a bit of good head?…

Cylinder head work, obviously. Get your mind out of the gutter.

The result? A rev-happy little screamer that absolutely loves being driven.

Point it at your favourite B-road and you’ll quickly discover what makes this thing so special. Thanks to the suspension and handling upgrades, it corners like a giant go-kart, eagerly diving into bends and somehow finding more grip the harder you push it. When it’s time to scrub off speed, the upgraded brakes inspire plenty of confidence too.

This is proper old-school driving fun.

Cooling and fuelling have also been given serious attention. There’s a large oil cooler, custom oversized radiator, upgraded fuel pump and improved fuel system throughout. In fact, this car previously ran a turbo setup, meaning much of the supporting hardware is already there should the next owner fancy turning things up another notch.

Visually, it absolutely nails the retro modified look. The satin black finish, subtle wide-arch styling, classic Minilite wheels and rear half cage give it those unmistakable late-80s and early-90s fast-road vibes. It’s the sort of car that gets smiles, thumbs up and plenty of conversations wherever it goes.

It looks right. It sounds right. And most importantly, it drives exactly how a fun retro hatch should.

If you’ve been looking for an affordable way into classic car ownership, want something guaranteed to stand out from the crowd, or simply fancy owning one of the coolest Metros we’ve had through the doors, this could be the one.

For not a lot of money, you could be blasting down your favourite B-road in a proper retro pocket rocket.

Low odds. Huge smiles.

You know what to do.
