It seems we have developed a bit of a problem at EP-COMPS… we keep buying convertible cars. We aren’t entirely sure how this keeps happening, but when we spotted this Audi S4 sitting there in Cambridge Green Pearl, we obviously had absolutely no choice but to get it on site!
Now, this isn’t just any S4.
It’s a 2005 Audi S4 Cabriolet, meaning it benefits from the cheaper tax bracket, but more importantly, under that bonnet sits Audi’s legendary 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, producing a very healthy 340bhp and launching this rather large convertible to 62mph in just 5.5 seconds. And unlike the modern crop of turbocharged performance cars, this is one of those engines that makes its presence known properly. No turbo, no complicated downsized engine… just 4.2 litres of naturally aspirated V8 goodness.
This particular car has covered around 100,000 miles and comes with a good amount of history, which for a 2005 car means it has plenty of life left in it while still being a usable example of what is becoming a much harder-to-find generation of S4.
But then we discovered the bit that made us stop and think…
That colour.
Cambridge Green Pearl isn’t exactly something you see every day. In fact, this was a special-order colour, making this particular S4 an exceptionally unusual specification. Combine that with the half-Alcantara interior and black roof, and you’ve got an S4 Cabriolet that is a long way from the usual silver, black or grey examples you tend to see.
And this is where things get really interesting.
We bought it because it was green.
Then we discovered just how special this particular green actually is.
Sometimes we deliberately go looking for something unusual. This time, we’ve somehow managed to stumble into it completely by accident. That’s very much how EP-COMPS works: “Ooh, that’s green. We like that.” …followed shortly afterwards by “Wait… HOW rare is this thing?!”
The S4 itself is already becoming an increasingly interesting car. A proper naturally aspirated V8 sports car, manual-era Audi performance, understated styling, a convertible roof and enough practicality to actually use it. Cars like this simply aren’t being made anymore, and as the years pass, clean and unusual examples are becoming harder to find.
Then you’ve got the rare factory specification on this one.
For the Audi enthusiast, that’s the sort of detail that can turn a nice S4 into a seriously interesting S4. It’s the kind of car that could easily become increasingly sought-after as people start looking beyond the obvious performance cars and realise just how few of these unusual specifications were actually produced.
So yes, we may have accidentally bought another convertible.
But, it has a V8.
And its a very rare green
And yes, you can probably guess Ed was in charge of buying all these convertibles.
But this time, we might have stumbled across something genuinely special.
A 340bhp naturally aspirated V8, a proper Audi performance car, a convertible, a fantastic colour combination and a factory specification you simply don’t see every day.
If you fancy getting your hands on a rather special piece of Audi history before everyone else realises just how interesting these cars are becoming, you know what to do.
