THE GOLF GTI IS BACK!
Hot hatches… we bloody love them here at EP-COMPS. Small, light-ish, quick enough to get you into trouble and, most importantly, actually fun to drive. But there is one rather large elephant in the hot-hatch room that we’ve somehow managed to forget to do…
The Golf GTI.
Yep. We know. We should probably hand our petrolhead credentials back.
The GTI was an absolute icon when it first arrived, but by the late ’90s and early 2000s, some of that magic had started to disappear. The Mk4 was, in our humble opinion, a little bit too fat, a little bit too sensible and a little bit too underpowered. It was still a Golf, it was still a GTI and it still had the badge… but that naughty little spark that made the original GTI so special seemed to have gone missing somewhere between Wolfsburg and the nearest Volkswagen dealership.
We like to think someone at Volkswagen was absolutely furious about it.
Perhaps they walked into the boardroom one morning, slammed their Mk4 GTI keys on the table and shouted:
“RIGHT. WHO THE HELL HAS RUINED THE GTI?”
Because whatever happened next worked.
Volkswagen came back swinging with the Mk5 Golf GTI and suddenly that little flame was burning again. Out went the blandness and in came sharper, more aggressive styling, proper GTI attitude and, most importantly, a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 200bhp.
And that turbo engine changed the game.
Suddenly the GTI had the shove it deserved. Enough power to be properly quick, but without turning it into some ridiculous, unusable monster. The Mk5 was still a Golf underneath it all, meaning you could drive it every day, throw your shopping in it, take your mates out and generally behave like a normal human being… right up until you find a decent bit of road.
Then the GTI bit kicks in.
And this is exactly why it belongs on EP-COMPS.
Because we’re not interested in just throwing random cars on here because they happen to have a desirable badge. We want cars that people actually want to own, cars with a bit of history, a bit of character and something that makes you look back at them after you’ve parked.
This one is finished in black with the classic tartan GTI seats, and honestly, it’s a bloody brilliant combination. Understated from the outside, but open the door and you’re immediately reminded that you’re sitting in something a little more special than your nan’s diesel Golf.
And when it comes to modifications?
It’s basically stock.
The only real addition is a remap, allowing that 2.0 turbo engine to stretch its legs a little further and making sure it can still keep up with a fair few of the modern hot hatches that have arrived since.
No ridiculous body kit.
No questionable stickers.
No exhaust that sounds like an angry washing machine.
No 19-inch wheels ruining the ride.
Just a Mk5 Golf GTI with a little extra spice.
And let’s be honest, we don’t really need to explain what a Golf GTI is. If you’re reading this and you’re a genuine petrolhead, you’ll already know exactly why the Mk5 is such a capable car. It sits right in that sweet spot where it’s fast enough to be exciting, practical enough to use every day and old enough now to have genuine future-classic appeal.
And that’s another reason we wanted to do this one.
The Mk5 GTI is becoming increasingly recognised for what it is, and good examples aren’t exactly getting easier to find. Values have started to creep upwards as people realise that the cars they remember from their youth are no longer just cheap used hot hatches.
Which makes this a pretty bloody good opportunity.
And then there’s the EP-COMPS way of doing things.
We’re putting this one on at low odds and a fair ticket price, because that’s how we like to run our competitions. There’s always someone claiming to have the “best odds” or the “cheapest tickets” — but we prefer to simply consistently offer good odds and fair pricing rather than shout about it every five minutes.
